Omschrijving

In July 1988, following the deployment of a new type of weapon of mass destruction in Japan’s Kantō region, World War III broke out. Thirty-one years later, in 2019, preparations are underway for the following year’s Olympic Games, offering occasional glimpses of Neo-Tokyo’s former glory. Built on Tokyo Bay, the sprawling megalopolis is a city in decline. Kaneda, leader of a bōsōzoku motorcycle gang, leaves a trail of destruction as he tears through the desolate streets of Neo-Tokyo. One evening, Tetsuo, a member of the gang, collides with a mysterious subject of a government experiment. In utter disbelief, Kaneda and the rest of the gang watch as Tetsuo and the enigmatic boy are taken to a military laboratory. Determined to rescue Tetsuo, Kaneda attempts to infiltrate the military facility, where he discovers that Tetsuo has developed supernatural powers. Meanwhile, one of the test subjects in a special nursery for children with extraordinary abilities predicts the awakening of the top-secret entity known as AKIRA. As Tetsuo ventures into the underworld where AKIRA lies dormant, he begins to put his newfound powers to the test.
