Omschrijving

Terwijl de inwoners van Irak in de jaren ’90 te midden van de oorlog en voedseltekorten proberen te overleven, eist Saddam Hoessein dat elke school in het land een taart bakt om zijn verjaardag te vieren. De 9-jarige Lamia krijgt de opdracht een taart mee naar school te nemen voor de verplichte verjaardagsviering van de president. Tegen de achtergrond van verlammende armoede en voedseltekorten reist zij van het platteland naar de stad, naarstig op zoek naar de benodigde ingrediënten.

While the people of Iraq in the 1990s struggle to survive amid war and food shortages, Saddam Hussein demands that every school in the country bake a cake to celebrate his birthday. Nine-year-old Lamia is tasked with bringing a cake to school for the president’s mandatory birthday celebration. Against a backdrop of crippling poverty and food scarcity, she travels from the countryside to the city, desperately searching for the ingredients she needs.
